Mission to Unreached Peoples is a broadly interdenominational agency which focuses on unreached people groups.

Our History

Mission to Unreached Peoples was started in 1981 to bridge the gap between traditional missions and Christian relief and development. Initial activities revolved around raising funds for small projects undertaken by national Christians in the developing countries of Asia.

First MUP MIssionariesIn 1983 we were joined by our first missionary family, who lived and worked in Seattle for several months developing training materials, while awaiting visas for their placement in Nepal in December of that year. The faith and determination of this couple, to stay with the call God had placed in their hearts to work in Nepal--a country closed to traditional missionaries--helped shape our determination as an organization to find creative strategies to enter "closed" countries, gaining access for the Good News of Jesus Christ to those peoples unreached by His Gospel.

In August 1986, with the placement of a 14-member team in China, the total number of personnel in Asia had grown to 38, in addition to more than a dozen ministry projects run by Asian nationals in 11 countries. Since that time, we have sent hundreds of working witnesses for Jesus Christ to Asia and Eastern Europe.

In 1990, the emphasis of Mission to Unreached People shifted to add a focus on church planting, evangelism, and the placement and support of an increasing number of long-term missionaries. Our passion is to see the church mobilized with each member using their unique gifts and calling in response to the Great Commission.

Mission to Unreached Peoples' initial focus was the mobilization of lay Christians to use their vocational skills in a variety of creative strategies to access closed, closing, or newly opened countries with the Gospel. With the experience of 20 years, we believe that Mission to Unreached Peoples understands the unique needs of vocational missionaries.

Our membership is currently an effective balance of professionally trained missionaries (including Bible School and Seminary graduates), a wide variety of community development personnel, and vocationally trained missionaries, including tentmakers. We have come to highly value the strengths of each calling working together in unity.

The mission is a member of EFMA, AFMA, and ECFA.
